THE SOAPBOX

Broken Hearts and Minds

It's not exactly a mandate but a high turnout for mid-term elections which shifted the balance of power in the Federal legislative branch certainly sent a message of dissatisfaction among the populace of these United States to those who govern. While the Democratic party winners may crow about it being a referendum on the war (pull all the troops out!) they should not make the mistake of reading dissatisfaction as impatience or even defeatist attitudes. Many say taking Sadam down was a mistake. Time will tell. However, we are there and as Colin Powell said, "now you own it".

We have an obligation to do it right and with all alacrity. I for one believe, like President Bush 43, that the best way to assure peace and prosperity is to establish Democracy and free commerce where we once had enemies. To do so in the face of "hot" assymetric tactics (as opposed to the cold war stand-off) and war of a thousand pinpricks we need an iron fist, the patience of Job, and the charity and love of our fellow humans as given to us by the grace of God.

Otherwise, our enemies will deem us weak and their message of hatred, intolerance and Jihad will expand. Worldwide demographics as well as European demographics already point to Islam as the fastest growing and fastest spreading religion in our time. Now imagine every muslim as a jihadist, bent on killing you so as to obtain the eternal heavenly reward.

How do you define civil war? Is Iraq in a Civil War? I don't care what you call it or what definition it may or may not meet. They are killing each other and killing our troops. The situation in Iraq as I can tell, after full activation of my BS detector, bias protection and agitprop sensor systems, is that there is general lawlessness, gang warfare and where it can exist, a thriving free economy and free press. I suspect there is great fear among the secular, liberal, educated and common genteel folks, fear which has, for all but elections, driven them into darkness and hiding, filled with fear and loathing of everything that has gotten them in such a position. Including US.

We own it now, we HAVE to fix it. Bush 43 and Donald Rumsfeld were given 3 years to fix it and it's still broke. Here in America the ultimate way to register dissatisfaction is at the ballot box. So we did. Now that Donald Rumsfeld is gone and we have the much ballyhooed Baker report, which, in one sentence says, "pull out in 2008". No doubt the jihadists are cheering at this thought, seeing it as weakness and a lack of resolve. They can't wait and perhaps that makes the report good war tactics as a means to draw the enemy out.

The Cold War, as much as an ideological war as this one, took 50 years to win. That's our real timeframe for the war on terror. As for Iraq, we need to establish the rule of law and the safety of the street for Joe Iraqi or sure as I'm writing this, it will flash the entire region into the 3rd world war with the entire mideast and central asia becoming the battlespace. It already nearly is.

The status quo had to change here in the US and the war is only a small part of the cause. Historically, no party has held both houses and the executive branch simultaneously for long so this shift was almost inevitable really. Over time, long serving politicos get tossed out fairly regularly, sometimes in disgrace or scandal, sometimes because of shifting winds. Some few are finally able to retire gracefully.

Have faith, hope and charity in your hearts dear reader, coupled with the patience of Job. Support a strong army with enough troops to get the job done right, which is many more, of specialized types (like police, special ops, intel and civil affairs) than we have available now. Otherwise, at best we'll have a stalemate in Iraq.

It is evident that within the devout of Islam there is strong faith. We must increase their hope and charity as expressed as love for their fellow humans and to turn away from the intolerant hatreds and irrational desire to kill anyone slightly different from themselves.

At stake is human civilization, that's all.

The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good. Say these things. Exhort and correct with all authority. Let no one look down on you.

QUOTES FOR YOUR THOUGHTS

Those that expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it.

Thomas Paine
(1737 - 1809)
US Patriot and Writer
The American Crisis 4, September 12, 1777

*

That Religion, or the duty which we owe to our Creator, and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence; and therefore all men are equally entitled to the free exercise of religion, according to the dictates of conscience; and that it is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, love and charity towards each other.

Patrick Henry
(1736 - 1799)
Virginia Bill of Rights (June 12, 1776) article 16

*

The author of the Satanic Verses book, which is against Islam, the Prophet, and the Koran, and all those involved in its publication who were aware of its content, are sentenced to death. I ask all Moslems to execute them wherever they find them.

Ayatolla Ruholla Khomeini
(1900 - 1989)
Statement, February 14, 1989
