THE SOAPBOX My Purple Thumb It's that time again in the United States, the dreaded mid-term elections. It is embarrassing to me that, as a percentage of voters, more Iraqi's and Afghans turned out and voted in their last elections than Americans did in theirs. I am sure that you, like me, want things better, safer, more prosperous, filled with freedom, justice. We get the civil leaders we elect, so if everyone cares like you and me then why doesn't everyone vote? I am a witness to this apathy, this choice of non-participation, everywhere I turn. In civil elections. In volunteerism in schools, church and secular organizations. In my neighborhood homeowner's association. The examples are many. Democracy is hard. You have to get to know the candidates, their issues and then make good choices guided by your reason and conscience. You have to put up with attack ads, pollsters, phone messages from the candidates, political campaign signs everywhere. It's a bunch of work, a disturbance in the routine, an annoyance. At least we aren't routinely threatened with being shot if we DO vote. Think about that and about the bravery of the average Iraqi and Afghan citizen who voted, voted for THEIR leaders who will take them to THEIR future. If you are registered to vote, then do so on November 7th, 2006. I'll see you there and my thumb will be purple. The Pentagon calls it the Long War. Battling non-state entities like the Jihadist extremists will involve years of low intensity (small arms and IED's) conflicts at hot spots around the globe. The battle is against a foe willing to die for their cause because they go straight to Heaven. Their cause is to kill all of us and establish a worldwide Caliphate. The Pope spoke out against this warped thinking, this divorce of the connect between reason and spiritualism. For more just Google up "LOGOS and POPE". He apologized for their misunderstanding. Of course, any group or individual who has already divorced reason from spirituality would fail to understand the Pope's real meaning. Nonetheless, the MSM had a field day with the comments and the subsequent "apology". Ahhhh, the spin it took! Let me put this in a nutshell for national election purposes. The Democrats, and much of liberal Europe, believes the war on terror is a police action. Catch them, put them on trial and send them to prison. The Republicans (and the British and the Russians and a few others) believe it is a military and in large part covert intelligence operation. Find them, fix them, kill them. The stakes are high and I for one don't want my daughter in a burkha. I don't think you do either. Here's my suggestion; vote exactly opposite of what you think your average Jihadist would want you to. If you are registered to vote, then do so on November 7th, 2006. I'll see you there and my thumb will be purple. We have a new Federal Reserve Chairman, but it looks like it's stay the course. As long as inflation is low and interest rates are sufficient to prevent wide amplitude swings in the economy we will be all OK. Fuel prices are easing and despite the doomsayers you can believe that oil is ridiculously plentiful at anything above $50 a barrel. Here's my suggestion to improve your profit; buy high quality surplus materials. Buying lower cost materials is the most leveraged means to improve profitability.
