It seems that after the US rejected, in no uncertain terms, the UN's bid to take over the root DNS servers and TCP/IP standardization from ICANN, the EU is now plotting a coup! Allied with several other countries, many with dismal attitudes regarding free speech and histories of jack-booted censorship, the EU is planning a multinational meeting to draft a plan for submission to the UN.
The belief is that faced with a coalition of nations in the UN, the US would have no choice but to acquiesce.
However, think of this- in the USA, the Internet "is deserving of the fullest measure of protection under the First Amendment." (Landmark US Supreme Court decision, ACLU v Reno, I believe in 1997) Now if a totalitarian state such as China has any say-so over the root DNS servers, then it is quite easy to believe that they would simply delete all DNS entries, worldwide, that conflict with their ideology. And with police states controlling the protocol, would it not be quite easy to dictate that all Internet communications have "back doors" for Government surveillance?
Despite the hand-wringing of the neolibs, the USA has the widest range of basic individual rights and freedoms of any nation. Further, our Constitution forbids the USA from being subservient to ANY other nation's laws. The Constitution of the United States of America is the root document for our nation, it cannot, MUST NOT, be further compromised!
We must not allow the crooked politicians of the UN to subvert Free Speech in the US by taking over ICANN!
My alternative: Every police-state banana republic that wants to run their own root DNS server can do so. Allow the WTU to assign top-level domains, and NOTHING MORE! All free-speech loving nations can remain with ICANN, operating the Internet under US rules of free speech.
When a user in one of the police-state banana republics wishes to access a US website, then that country's DNS would have to hand them off to the ICANN DNS to get the appropriate IP address. As most of these jackboots want control over the root servers simply to maintain their regime, they would never do this! So the effect would be that no country censoring the Internet would ever have internet access to ANYTHING in the USA! Fine! We have the most servers, the most clients, the most businesses, and the best infrastructure! Any idiot can opt-out of the US Internet, if they don't like free speech! But you lose all that we can provide. And so WHAT if we lose YOU? Assholes like that I do not care visit on the Internet! You suffer far more than we do!
I see this as a blatant power-grab by those who did NOTHING to build the Internet. These fools wish to steal what Americans have spent money, blood, sweat, and tears to create, and offer us NOTHING in return! In fact, they offer us less than nothing- they offer us censorship, eavesdropping, and subjugation of our society under laws that are anathema to any red-blooded American!
After the Iraq oil-for-food scandal, after the gross failure of the UN in
Somalia and elsewhere, after the Law of the Sea Treaty power-grab, and after the UN's demonstrated impotence in dealing with nuclear proliferation in Iran and North Korea, it is time for the US to withdraw from the UN. IMHO, the UN is nothing more than a bunch of crooked, selfish politicians, attempting to institute a New World Order for their own selfish desires. This issue is the last straw- stealing what hard-working Americans built over forty years, just to make money and undermine our Constitution! I say we tell the UN where to go, and what to do with their posterior orifice when they get there! Sit on THIS, Kofi!
And the UN building can be renovated to provide public housing for our own welfare recipients! What irony! The building used by the organization that created the international welfare state, destroying the work ethic and creating welfare dependence on a worldwide scale, can now be trashed and covered in gang graffiti by good, red-blooded American welfare recipients! Kofi's office can become a crack house! Put the ho's into the Security Council chamber! The parking lot can be filled with dubbed-out Bimmers, Lexes, and Benz, all pimped out with twenty-kilowatt amps and subwoofers, blasting gangsta rap! Let the entire world witness the ultimate result of flawed Liberal thinking.
