THE SOAPBOX

It is always with a mixture of amusement and amazement that I observe our quadrennial election process. While I am not old enough to remember an election prior to the Age of Television my readings in American History tell of scandals, corruption and (print) media feeding frenzies in the past. This one is shaping up to be no different. The feeding frenzy has begun and we are not yet to the so called "Super Tuesday".

The naybobs will try to scare you. Scare you about the economy, the war, education, jobs, health care, the environment. And a hundred more things to be scared about in our melting-pot. But our Republic withstood a mighty scare in the last election. Yet we survived. The Supreme Court put an end to the seemingly endless ballot recounting and Bush was declared the winner in Florida. With the electoral votes won by winning in Florida Bush had enough to be declared the President.

Then, a funny thing happened in the White House, something that happens to every man who enters the White House as the resident of the Oval Office. He became our President and the weight of the Nation and the responsibility of that office changed him.

In the case of our current President he was then challenged with the events of September 11, 2001. A challenge of a kind that few Presidents in our history have faced. In a faltering economy. Imagine for a moment if the Japaneese had attacked Pearl Harbor in 1930, 6 months or so after Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929.

I can hardly see Mr. Gore doing much fundamentally different were he in the Oval Office in the same circumstances. Our counrty represents the pinnacle of western thoughts and ideals and it is that, even more than us as a people, that the radical muslims, the Islamists, sought to destroy with their attacks on American soil.

Well here's a radical idea for you. Let's disarm all muslim men, but allow, no let's make that require, all muslim women to be armed. Now, how long do you think the burkha, bigamy and the madrassas systems will last? I would bet that attendence at the mosque would go up too. Does our plan for Iraq include the rights of women to vote? You bet! In the long-term, that is an even better plan than mine.

I once again recommend Triumph by H.W. Crocker III. While this book is primarily a history of the Catholic church it nonetheless provides a context of the the roots of the current world conflict, a conflict between two of the world's great religions, Islam and Christianity. It is unfortunate that this long conflict continues.

Speaking of media frenzy, the Super Bowl halftime show has sparked a small firstorm. I am sure the French are amused, but the FCC certainly was not. Here in America that sort of entertainment is unsuited for broadcast television in prime time, when children are watching. It is too bad that tawdriness and not talent became the centerpiece of the halftime show of the NFL Championship game.

The GAO has issued a new report on the Space Shuttle and manned spaceflight. For the foreseeable future the shuttle will remain the primary launch and recovery platform for manned spaceflight. New approaches for launching men have been proposed; yet even so the shuttle will remain the platform for heavy lifting, especially for components of and the supply of the ISS. Service life of the vehicles are expected to to be another 20 years. Issues with flying experimental vehicles for 40 years will remain and will need to be addressed, as the report clearly points out.

It is quite possible that in the meantime the X-prize will be won and a truly economical means of launching crews to the ISS and returning them will be developed by the private sector. Heavy lifting of large structures, heavy payloads or payloads destined for long distances and duration, well that is another matter. It is my opinion that we should continue to fly the shuttle because of the capability it has and the basic flight research opportunities it offers. Without replacements and at the current attrition rate we are going to run out of shuttles in less than 20 years.

Mr. Greenspan has publicly stated that the Federal Reserve remains vigiliant to keep inflation in check, a strong signal that rate increases may be forthcoming. All of which are signs of a continuing to improve economy. Job growth remains stagnant however, but then there is always some facet of our nation's economy that is less than "nominal". Especially in an election year.

To improve profits buy high quality surplus materials. Buying lower cost materials is the most leveraged means to improve profitability. Better than cutting labor and overhead costs. Better than increasing sales. So browse our site, check the listings and find an item you need. We'll save you money and improve your profits!

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

One day, Jimmy Joe was walking down Main Street, in Sebastian, when he saw his buddy, Bubba, driving a brand new pickup. Bubba pulled up to him with a big- wide, toothless grin. "Hey, Bubba, where'd you get that new truck?!?"

"Bobby Sue gave it to me" Bubba replied.

"She gave it to you??.... I knew she was kinda sweet on ya, but a new truck?"

"Well, Jimmy Joe, let me tell you what happened. We were driving out on County Road 512, out past Fellsmere, when Bobby Sue pulled off the road. She put the truck in 4-wheel drive, and headed into the woods. She parked the truck, got out, threw off all her clothes, and said, 'Bubba, take whatever you want'.

"So, I took the truck!"

"Bubba, you're a smart man!. Them clothes woulda never fit you!

All the monks in a certain monastery sing the simple word "Morning!" from their windows each sunrise. Early one day after several "Morning!" greetings have been sung melodiously into the dawn air, a single greeting of "Evening!" rings out of one window.

In the courtyard below, Brother Timothy looks around startled, and says "Did you hear that, Brother Edward?" "Hear what, Brother Timothy?" replied Brother Edward. Brother Timothy sang in reply: "Someone chanted evening..."

During a recent vacation in Las Vegas, a man went to see a popular magic show.

After one especially amazing feat, a man from the back of the theater yelled, "How'd you do that?" "I could tell you, sir", the magician answered, "But then I'd have to kill you."

After a short pause, the man yelled back, "Ok, then... just tell my wife!"

What do you get when you play country music backwards? You get your wife back, you get your truck back, you get your job back.

QUOTES FOR YOUR THOUGHTS

*

The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community against his will is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant. He cannot rightfully be compelled to do or to forbear because it will be better for him to do so, because it will make him happier, because in the opinions of others to do so would be wise or even right. These are good reasons for remonstrating with him, or reasoning with him, or persuading him, or entreating him, but not for compelling him, or visiting him with any evil in case he do otherwise.

John Stuart Mill, On Liberty [1859]

*

If you would hit the mark, you must aim a little above it:
Every arrow that flies feels the attraction of the earth.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

*

To educate a person in mind and not in morals
is to educate a menace to society."

President Theodore Roosevelt

*

Nothing has such power to broaden the mind as the ability to investigate systematically and truly all that comes under thy observation in life.

Marcus Aurelius
