THE SOAPBOX I have said it before, war is dirty business. Most warmaking is about team effort on both micro (squad) and macro (brigade and larger) scales. America's love of team sports and the skill at which we play them is reflected in our Military. America is now so good at war that we have made large-scale warfare, what President Bush refered to as "major combat", all but obsolete. Who with a rational mind would challenge the might of the American combined-arms team? Maybe the DPRK, but after taking painful initial licking, the South Koreans, with our help, would ultimately annihilate the DPRK Army. An annihilation that will occur even if Kim Il Jong uses nukes, which would prove without a doubt (on both counts) he's not rational. So what is left for our enemies to fight us with? Guerilla style warfare and terror attacks. Widespread low intensity conflict. Something the Military terms Military Operations Other than War. In short, anything that will sap the strength and will of an enemy. For the Islamists and Anarchists of the world that means attacks on you, your comforts, your job and your sense of security and well-being. Recent increase in the size and number of attacks can be interpereted in various ways. On the left it is a sign of "popular revolt against the imperialist (Christian) invaders" and their brutal tactics. On the right it is the "dying gasp of failed regimes". Regardless of how it it spun up it is a fact that in the past three weeks, since the bombing of the Jordanian embassy in Baghdad, large scale attacks against soft targets in Iraq and elsewhere have increased. Even the Taliban has struck in a relatively large manner in Afganistan. Now just connect the dots. You can do it. What caused the Great Blackout of 2003? Was it terror? Was it ageing infrastructure? The causes are unclear. I for one do not give creedence to the terror claim; it smells of opportunistic PR by our enemies. Their style is to make multiple, simultaneous attacks. If they knocked out the power why didn't they subsequently attack all the soft "targets" walking home, exploit the confusion and "force multiply" their effort, as is clearly their style? If it was an act of terror by our enemies they missed an opportunity, one that will probably not occur again. Let us also be thankful that if it was a terror attack it was an attack on the economy and not on innocent human lives. I have voiced concerns in past editions regarding energy shortages as a restraint on the economy. Whether the Great Blackout was terror or not it clearly showed our dependence on energy to run our modern economy. Resolving the issues will take time but it looks like we have learned a costly lesson. On the bright side it reinforces the preparedness message The Department of Homeland Security received so much ridicule about. One can never know when a tornado, hurricane, earthquake, flood, terror attack or power blackout will occur. Each of you should prepare now for an emergency situation, and frankly the most likely ones are not terror attacks. For me the Great Blackout also showed that America knows it is at war; there was no panic to be found in the pictures on TV of our great northeastern cities without power. Looting was almost non-existant. Almost everyone's immediate reaction was "it's another act of terror". Instead of panic everyone just started walking home and making plans for the unexpected 3 day weekend. Which is anything but Americans reacting in fear to terror. Act of terror or not economic damage has been done. This blackout is not something our weak economic situation needed. Will it shake the confidence of the American consumer? Time will tell. What you can do is reduce your debt, save some money and spend the rest. So maybe the vacations and 4 star meals get scaled back, but don't stay home and sit on all your money. Just spend what you can and help the economy recover. As James Carville said "It's the economy stupid". Patience and hard work will overcome the evil which now confronts us. I believe we have what it takes to win. Keep in mind the principle of TANSTAAFL. We must remember that blowing things up is much faster than building or rebuilding them. The opressed people of Iraq, the ones staying at home, in misery, waiting for things to get better know that it isn't Americans blowing up water and oil pipelines and electrical plants and transmission lines. They know Americans aren't blowing up foreign embassies and UN headquarters either. Finally, they know that without America's help they would still be oppressed by the tyrant Saddam Hussein. We continue to get raw material price increases for the new (not surplus or distressed) chemicals we must buy. Anything with an "ethyl" in it has been hammered. Which is to say almost everything. We shop around as hard as we can but there is no arguing with the cost of gas and feedstocks. Once everyone has gone up in price equally there is nowhere else to go.
