THE SOAPBOX

The events of September 11 continue to overshadow the psyche of the US. Indeed, the events of the past year, economic, political and international have deeply shaken the long held optimism of the country.

This all began with last year's presidental election. Three weeks of political uncertainty without a doubt shook an economy already struggling and gasping at the end of the longest growth period in modern history. The experts now tell us that the economy entered a recession in March 2001. Well what do you know!

Uncertainty is bad for markets and we hold the opinion that the undecided election is what really started the recession. Perhaps future historians will agree. Nonetheless, we still marvel at the strength of our democracy. We remain firm in our conviction that the rule of law and the principles of justice and liberty from which our country was founded form the basis of our stable and prosperous economy. We believe that that these principles were affirmed in the strongest possible way by the events of last November and future economic prosperity is thereby assured.

Mankind has stepped from the brink of destruction of civilization by nuclear weapons yet remains a dangerous place. We know now that stateless anarchists are capable of mass destruction in ways previously unimagined. We must expect future acts of terrorism, even if the current war is successful beyond the most optimistic predictions. We must expect to be targets of terror because of our principles of freedom, liberty and equality, principles abhorrent to those who seek to destroy us and our modern civilization.

New groups will spring up, hateful, manipulative and fiendishly clever. They will be hidden in plain sight and bent on terror. There will always be enemies of civilized behavior and the status quo. Lacking a viable political means to effect change the enemies of civilization will turn to nihilism and violence as they always do. What we now know is that they need not be a state or political entity and that is the new reality. Rest assured they are real and we as a country must remain vigilant and watchful.

The worst thing we can do is succumb to fear and disrupt our normal lives, for that is the object of terror. Fundamentally, nothing has changed in the Nation's economy despite a the election and the terror attacks. Crops need planted, bread and milk are made and sold, the kids still have to go to school and the banks are open as always. You are much more likely to die from "natural" causes like tobacco related illnesses, traffic accidents or heart disease than a terror attack.

If you feel like doing something for your country then do your part and spend some money on things you can afford, go out to eat someplace and enjoy your freedom as an American!

May God bless you and have a safe and Happy Holidays!

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
*

A man asked his wife, "if you could have anything in the world for one day, what would you want?" "I'd love to be six again," she replied. On the morning of her birthday, he got her up bright and early and off they went to a local theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in thepark: the Death Slide, the Screaming Loop, the Wall of Fear, everything there was! Wow!

Five hours later she staggered out of the theme park, her head reeling andher stomach upside down. Off to McDonald's they went, where her husband ordered her a Big Mac along with extra fries and a refreshing chocolate shake. Then it was off to a movie: the latest Hollywood blockbuster, hot dogs, popcorn, Pepsi Cola and M&M's.

What a fabulous adventure! Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed. He leaned over and lovingly asked, "Well, dear, what was it like being six again?"

One eye opened. "You idiot, I meant my dress size."

The moral of this story is: If a woman speaks and a man is actually listening, he will still get it wrong.

One day, a mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, chemical engineer, and computer engineer were driving down the street in the same car when it broke down.

The mechanical engineer said, "I think a rod broke."

The chemical engineer said, "The way it sputtered at the end, I think
it's not getting enough gas."

The electrical engineer said, "I think there was a spark and something's wrong with the electrical system."

All three turned to the computer engineer and said, "What do you think?"

The computer engineer said, "I think we should all get out and then get back in."

TWO QUOTES FOR YOUR THOUGHTS

"Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity."

George S. Patton (1885-1945), American military leader

"Business is a means - the only means - to increase the quantity of goods available for preserving life and rendering it more agreeable."

Ludwig von Mises ("dean" of the Austrian free-market oriented school of economics)
