CHEMICAL INDUSTRY NEWS

For the most up to the minute chemical industry financial news - If you're here you are at least able to connect to the Internet, and if you're alive then you have heard of Yahoo!, the Internet business phenom. We'll reserve comment at this time regarding the realism of their stock price in relation to the usual standards of financial analysis. Nonetheless, they have a good thing going, and their chemical industry news page is the best on the 'net right now. You can visit them at http://biz.yahoo.com/news/chemicals.html . Another good Yahoo! site is their Biz page specific for Chemicals. You can visit it at http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Companies/Chemicals/

THE SOAPBOX

We Americans and our Democracy have survived the election and another peaceful transition of power has occurred. This particular election and its historic pathway to final outcome has been at the very least a grand and public lesson on how our system works. The narrow margin of victory, itself lesson on our system of popular and electoral votes, shows what an intelligent electorate our nation has!

What better way to maintain gridlock in Washington than an evenly divided congress and a new President who lost the popular vote. We are all for girdlock as it is our opinion that there are enough laws and lawyers. We are sure that if and when the national interest is at stake Congress and our new President are fully capable of rising up together and meeting such a challenge with all of the strength, leadership and courage as any Congress or President that preceeded them.

In the meantime gridlock is fine as the Business of America is Business. The worst of the doomsayers are speaking of a deep and long recession. Mr. Greenspan has eased and will most likely ease once again. A tax cut may even be passed by our new government. We certainly need it. A deep, long recession will be avoided.

What is clear is that a large speculative bubble has left the stock markets and paper fortunes have once again been lost. E-commerce, at least as we knew it in 1999 and 2000, has lost it's luster, but rest assured the internet is here to stay and companies will continue to discover new uses for it and ways to make money with it.

As long as we have electricity, anyhow, but that's another column.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
*

A
golfer who was known for his bad temper walked into the pro shop one day and plunked down big bucks for a new set of Woods.

The staff all watched to see what would happen after he used them for the first time - more than half expecting he'd come in and demand his money back.

But the next time he came in, he was all smiles.

"They're the best clubs I've ever had," he said. "In fact, I've discovered I can throw them at least 40 yards farther than I could my last ones."
*
A
young boy walked up to his father and asked, "Dad, does a lawyer ever tell the truth?"

The father thought for a moment. "Yes, son. Sometimes a lawyer will do anything to win a case."
*
I
n the 1948 film "Key Largo'', the gangster played by Edward G. Robinson says to the character played by Humphrey Bogart: "Let me tell you about Florida politicians. I make them out of whole cloth, just like a tailor makes a suit. I get their name in the newspaper. I get them some publicity and get them on the ballot."

"Then after the election, we count the votes. And if they don't turn out right, we recount them. And recount them again. Until they do.''
